La Casa degli Archi

_t8k1789

The Casa degli Archi is immersed in all the history of the territory which surrounds it…

The southern side of the tufaceous cliff, where the house is, is the oldest part of the medieval village of Pitigliano and, with the nearby town of Sovana, was once the depature and arrival point for the Pitiglianesi people who travelled to work in the fields on the back of a donkey. The small piazza di capisotto and the surrounding alleyways can all be seen from the windows, so you can watch what is happening in the street and reflect on the beautiful past of this ancient town.

Up until the beginning of the 20th century Pitigliano had a population of donkeys which was almost higher than the number of its own locals. Traditional stories of the town tell of kilometre-long lines of animals, exhaused by the day’s work, slowly making their way back to the sweeping plains of the countryside at twilight. Today, 21st century technology has reached even here and the donkeys have been replaced by motobikes, api and three wheelled cars….even the oldest part of town is full of activity and you can see the young and eldery, who with ease, enjoy both the ancient charm and modern comforts which have been perfectly blended throughout the streets of Pitigliano.

With all this history it isn’t difficult to arrive in Pitigliano, like in all of the towns in the Hills of the Maremma, and immediately find the true and present traditions of the territory and Tuscany.
